Cycling the Land of Conquistadors from Parador to Parador, 7D/6N

A unique cycling tour in luxury Parador Hotels, in Extremadura, west Spain.

Paradors are luxury hotels with exquisite service located in National Heritage properties: unique, historic buildings such as restored Palaces, Monasteries or Castles.

The route starts in the old castle of Oropesa and takes you through the south side of the Gredos Mountains on the La Vera region, rich in agriculture, to then visit three beautiful old cities: Plasencia, Trujillo and Caceres. You will cycle along Monfrague National Park famous for its spectacular bird life. Extremadura is the land of the Spanish Conquistadors that grew in wealth from the conquest of South America.

Itinerary description

  • Day 1 Arrival at Oropesa.
    Easily reached by train from Madrid (1,40 hours).

  • Day 2 Oropesa to Jarandilla de la Vera.
    64 km.
    Hand over of the bike and cycle on flat land amongst typical Mediterranean woodland towards the foothills of the Gredos Mountains

  • Day 3 Jarandilla de la Vera to Plasencia.
  • 51 km.
    An easy cycle through lovely countryside takes us to the monumental town of Plasencia with its beautiful cathedral and old center.

  • Day 4 Plasencia to Monfrague.
    41 km.
    You cycle south towards the Tajo River. We approach the Natural park of Monfragüe famous for its bird life and on the way we will enjoy the typically extremenian landscape of grazing land with holy oaks and cork trees. This land has large farms that are dedicated to rearing wild bulls and the famous black “iberico” pig.

  • Day 5 Monfrague to Trujillo.
    40 km.
    Today we have an easy and beautiful ride on a quiet road and always surrounded by the huge grazing land areas. As you approach Trujillo you will be amazed to find a town so full of history and beauty in such a very wild and sparsely populated area.

  • Day 6 Trujillo to Caceres.
    59 km.
    The last day of cycling gives you a last chance to explore this beautifull landscape, crossing little villages along the way to reach the monumental city of Caceres. Strolling along the cobble stone narrow streets of the old city center and having a drink in one of its small old taverns or enjoying a terrace in one of its plazas is a great end to this holiday.

  • Day 7 Return home. Direct train to Madrid.

How to get there:

  • Which airport should I fly to? Madrid Barajas international airport.
  • How do I get to the Starting Point? Take a train from Madrid train station to Oropesa train station, 2 kms from the Parador. 5 trains a day, aprox. 1,45 hours and 15 Euros.
    How do I get back to Madrid? Train from Caceres to Madrid. 5 trains a day, aprox. 4 hours and 30 Euros.
